An urban forestry division supervisor with the D.C. transportation department said the tree, like many others in the country, had been attacked by a borer. Loss of the wood has affected tool makers, who use it for handles, such as hoe maker Napier in Harlan, Ky. Photo Credit: John A. With the federal government on ice, there were no National Park Service rangers walking the grounds and volunteers were picking up trash. Among them was David Spivey, 72, who was tidying around the Vietnam Memorial, with the temperature in the low 30s. Spivey, who served in the Army in Vietnam from December 1969 to December 1970 and whose job involved reporting to commanders about casualties, said he now works for the American Legion. “My organization asked for volunteers,” he said. “I signed up for this monument. We just wanted to do our little part to make things nice.” All Photos Credit: John A. The students from St. Joseph School in Seattle were on the annual class trip to the nation’s capital and teamed up for the service project with their counterparts at Holy Trinity School on 36th Street. St. Joseph Principal Patrick Fennessy, left, and Holy Trinity Principal Charlie Hennessy worked with John Maleri of the Rock Creek Conservancy on the project to pull out pervasive garlic mustard and ground ivy. They filled 47 bags and piled them at the top of the hill for removal. “We bring out groups all the time to different areas of the park to help remove it,” Maleri said. The tall and scraggly white-flowered mustard garlic and the aggressive creeping ivy have defied eradication efforts over the years. Photo Credit: John A. The job is expected to take about two weeks, according to Franky Aguilar, a foreman on the job for American Tennis Courts of Baltimore, Maryland.
Aguilar said the long fissures will be repaired and then the surface will get multiple coats of a specialized material. The courts will be painted, blue inside the lines and green outisde, Aguilar said.
According to its website, the company has “over a half-century of experience in the construction, maintenance and renovation of running tracks, tennis, basketball, and multi-purpose courts.”
Two potholes at the southeast end of the courts had been patched earlier by another crew. Photos Credit: John A. Bray
