WIND SONG: Bagpipers pass the facade of the former Safeway grocery, which closed in May after operating at the site since the 1950s. (So Long Safeway; Palisades Site Primed For “Memory Care”) The nearly 90-minute parade flowed down MacArthur Boulevard, from Whitehaven to Edmunds.

COLOR COORDINATED: A swirl of red, white and blue hits the boulevard with the help of traditional Bolivian dancers. Dance line leader Andres Vega, 19, part of the Caporales San Simon USA, said that about 80 dancers from the organization turned out for the event.

HEAVY METAL: A Metro Transit Police vehicle passes, along with a crew of city elected officials, dancers, skateboarders, firetrucks, a horse and buggy, a juggler and a unicycle rider and other performers.

88/90: The temperature and humidity puts paraders to the test. Rozmyn Miller, on hand with her son Jacob, brought a battery powered fan to help keep cool on her first time attending the parade. “We’ve lived around the corner for years and have always missed seeing it,” she said. “We just love this neighborhood.”

PARADE’S END: By the count of Peter Brusoe, grill tender from the Free and Accepted Masons of the Grand Lodge of D.C., 4,122 hot dogs, give or take a few, were ready to sizzle at the parade terminus at Palisades Recreation Center.
