A hearing is set for September 7, 2018 to take public comment on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s request for a permit to demolish the abandoned streetcar trestle at the south end of Glover Archbold National Park.
“Applicant’s claim is that failure to approve the raze permit will result in an unreasonable economic hardship,” according to the city’s State Historic Preservation Officer July 24 letter to trestle site “abutting or confronting” property owners. The 9:30 a.m. hearing is scheduled for Room E200 at 1100 4th Street, S.W.
The trestle has been the focus of preservationists who want the steel structure renovated as a pedestrian and cyclists bridge. About two years ago, the National Park Service closed the trail that passes under the trestle, citing concern about falling debris.
