Key School To Get $1 Million Modular Makeover

A $1 million replacement and expansion of Key Elementary School’s modular classroom complex is in the works, with completion anticipated by the end of July.

The project calls for installation of a new building containing five 24-foot by 34-foot classrooms and a single classroom of the same size, each with its own unisex bathroom, according to D.C. Department of General Services documents provided to PotomacTimes.

Demolition of landscaping and construction of a new covered walkway is expected, according to a summary of the project at the Palisades school, where enrollment has grown.

The task order was signed March 5, 2018 and work is to begin after the close of the current school year. The contractor is Paige Industrial Services, Inc. of northeast Washington, D.C.

Key, a PK-5 school, has an average class size of about 20 students and one teacher, with every PK, K and Grade 1 class also including an instructional aide, according to the school’s profile on its website. The profile pegs 2013 enrollment at 380 students, with 8 percent considered out-of-boundary. Enrollment for 2016-17, as noted on the DCPS website, was 397.
